We Who Imagine

2014 granite, trees, other vegetation

Commissioned by Tualatin HIlls Parks & Recreation, Beaverton, OR

An original poem by Bonnie Minden Ward is engraved onto a 100' line of granite. As the 26 native trees on either side of the line grow, they will shift, heave and break the line and the poem, creating an ever-changing composition between the text, the trees and the stone. The Poem, selected through an open call for poetry specifically for this work, reads:

We who imagine ourselves invincible, we sleep and plan
all the while branches grow, reaching into our windows
and all of us now under the ground
while even yet a tendril of green
rests waiting in soil soft as water
