Subduction
2014 granite
Commissioned by Tualatin HIlls Parks & Recreation, Beaverton, OR
Two slabs represent the underlying subduction zone geology of the Pacific Northwest, as the North American plate rides over the Juan de Fuca plate under the Pacific Ocean, causing earthquakes and volcanic activity. As the Douglas Fir tree grows it will push one stone over the other, mimicking the tectonic forces below. An 1846 map of the region engraved on the top stone adds another layer of time.
